The Challenge
David Lloyd Dartford required a comprehensive refurbishment and modernisation programme to align the club with the latest David Lloyd Leisure (DLL) design standards, elevating both the member experience and operational performance across a wide range of high-use facilities.
The project encompassed multiple distinct zones within an active leisure environment, including reception and transitional areas, the club lounge, business hub, and bar area, as well as dedicated family and children’s spaces such as DL Kids. Additional works were required across male, female, and family changing facilities, including showers and wet vanity zones, all of which demanded careful coordination to maintain functionality and durability in high-traffic areas.
Further complexity was introduced through the refurbishment of specialist fitness and wellness spaces, including the gym and studios—covering High Energy, Cyclone, Mind & Body, and the newly designed Pilates studio. The project also extended into wet leisure environments, with major works undertaken within the indoor pool and main pool hall, as well as the creation of a new spa wellness suite and spa garden.
Externally, the transformation included upgrades to the terrace area and the introduction of new outdoor padel courts, adding further interface points between internal and external services.
Delivering such a broad and varied scope within a live operational club presented significant logistical and sequencing challenges. Works had to be carefully planned and phased to minimise disruption to members while maintaining safety, access, and continuity of service across all areas of the facility. Coordinating multiple building environments—from wet leisure zones to high-spec wellness and fitness studios—required detailed planning and precise integration of mechanical and electrical services throughout.
Our Solution
Hensall delivered a fully coordinated mechanical and electrical solution at David Lloyd Dartford, supporting the transformation of the club in line with the latest David Lloyd Leisure design standards.
Working across all key zones, Hensall carried out a carefully phased refurbishment to minimise disruption to members while maintaining full operational continuity. The works were sequenced to allow each area to be upgraded efficiently before progressing to the next, ensuring consistent delivery across the live leisure environment.
Mechanically, Hensall upgraded and reconfigured services throughout the facility, supporting the modernisation of changing areas, wet vanity zones, gym spaces, studios, and wellness areas. This included improvements to ventilation, heating, and environmental control systems to enhance comfort and performance across high-traffic areas, as well as specialist integration within pool and spa environments.
In the indoor pool and main pool hall, systems were upgraded to improve air quality, humidity control, and overall environmental stability. The new spa wellness suite and spa garden were also supported with enhanced mechanical services designed to deliver a premium, controlled wellness experience.
From an electrical perspective, Hensall implemented upgraded power, lighting, and control systems throughout the refurbished areas, ensuring alignment with the updated club layout and user experience requirements. This included enhancements to lighting control across studios and fitness spaces, supporting flexible training environments such as High Energy, Cyclone, Mind & Body, and the new Pilates studio.
Careful coordination was required for external works, including the terrace upgrades and new padel courts, where services were integrated to support both functionality and aesthetics in outdoor environments.
Through detailed planning, phased delivery, and close coordination with the wider project team, Hensall successfully completed the refurbishment, delivering a modernised, high-performance leisure facility aligned with the David Lloyd brand standards.
