Ruthin Crafts Centre

The Challenge

Ruthin Craft Centre required the transformation of two adjoining studio spaces into a single, secure, and flexible exhibition environment to support nationally significant collections funded through the National Contemporary Arts Gallery Wales (NCAGW) loan programme.

A key challenge was upgrading and reconfiguring the existing building fabric while maintaining strict conservation, security, and environmental requirements associated with high-value exhibition lending. The works needed to be carefully delivered within an occupied cultural facility, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations and public access.

The redevelopment involved the removal of internal partitions and outdated installations to unify the studio spaces, requiring careful demolition within a sensitive arts environment. This had to be coordinated alongside the introduction of new structural and architectural elements, including timber doors, security-rated glazing, and blackout systems.

From a building services perspective, the project required significant mechanical and electrical upgrades to meet stringent environmental control standards aligned with Government Indemnity Scheme requirements. Maintaining stable temperature, humidity, and air quality conditions for artworks, while responding to fluctuating visitor loads, presented a key technical challenge.

Additional complexity came from integrating enhanced security systems, including CCTV, within a publicly accessible exhibition space, alongside the installation of LED lighting designed to meet both conservation and display requirements. Careful coordination of all systems was essential to ensure performance, compliance, and protection of valuable exhibits within a modernised cultural setting.

Our Solution

At Ruthin Craft Centre, Hensall delivered a fully coordinated mechanical and electrical upgrade to transform two adjoining studios into a single, secure, and environmentally controlled exhibition space for nationally significant collections funded through the NCAGW loan programme.

The works included the careful demolition and removal of internal partitions, followed by the installation of new services to support the unified gallery environment. Mechanical systems were upgraded to provide precise environmental control, ensuring stable temperature, humidity, and air quality conditions in line with Government Indemnity Scheme requirements, while remaining responsive to visitor-driven changes in occupancy.

Electrical works included the installation of conservation-appropriate LED lighting to enhance exhibition presentation, alongside integrated CCTV and security systems to protect high-value artworks. Enhanced environmental controls were also implemented to allow accurate monitoring and regulation of internal conditions.

New architectural elements, including timber doors, security-rated glazing, and blackout blinds, were carefully integrated with the building services to support both exhibition flexibility and security requirements.

Through close coordination, detailed planning, and careful execution within a sensitive cultural environment, Hensall successfully delivered a modern, secure, and fully controlled exhibition space that enhances the centre’s regional arts offering.
