Sharley Park Leisure Centre
The Challenge
Sharley Park Leisure Centre is a new-build, multi-use community leisure facility in Chesterfield, featuring a swimming pool, TAG Active zone, sports hall, café and kitchen, solar PV installation, and community-focused spaces including NHS and Citizens Advice facilities.
The project presented a significant challenge following the administration of the main contractor, requiring rapid reorganisation and recovery of the works to ensure the scheme could be successfully delivered. Hensall had to adapt quickly to a disrupted programme, taking on responsibility within an uncertain construction environment while maintaining continuity across mechanical and electrical installations.
A key challenge was coordinating and progressing partially completed works while re-establishing programme control, supply chains, and site coordination. The wide range of building functions added further complexity, with each area requiring tailored mechanical and electrical solutions to support its specific use, from wet leisure environments to high-occupancy community and fitness spaces.
Ensuring design intent, quality standards, and compliance were maintained while recovering lost time and realigning the delivery programme required careful planning, close collaboration with stakeholders, and a highly flexible approach to site execution.
Our Solution
At Sharley Park Leisure Centre, Hensall successfully supported the recovery and completion of the new-build leisure facility following the main contractor entering administration, working to re-establish programme certainty and deliver the remaining mechanical and electrical works.
The team quickly mobilised to assess the status of partially completed installations, re-coordinate outstanding works, and implement a clear delivery strategy to bring the project back on track. This included re-sequencing activities, re-engaging supply chains, and working closely with the wider project team to maintain momentum across all areas of the build.
Hensall delivered the remaining mechanical systems, including ventilation, heating, domestic services, and specialist plant associated with the swimming pool, café/kitchen, and community spaces. Electrical works were completed across power distribution, lighting, life safety systems, and specialist installations supporting the TAG Active zone, sports hall, and multi-use public areas.
Additional works included the integration of solar PV, supporting the building’s energy performance and sustainability goals, alongside full testing, commissioning, and system validation to ensure all services operated as intended.
Despite the challenges of a disrupted programme and partial handover, Hensall’s structured approach, coordination, and flexibility ensured the successful completion of a fully operational, modern leisure centre delivered to specification.
