The Challenge
The new retail fit-out for TK Maxx Northern Ireland Operations Store required the installation of a modern HVAC system within a large, open-plan retail environment, designed to deliver optimal comfort for both customers and staff across sales floor and back-of-house areas.
A key challenge was implementing a VRF air conditioning system capable of providing simultaneous heating and cooling within the same space, ensuring consistent comfort levels despite varying occupancy, zoning requirements, and fluctuating internal loads typical of a busy retail environment.
The integration of a new heat recovery air handling unit (AHU) added further complexity, requiring precise control strategies based on CO₂ levels within return air to maintain air quality and comfort while maximising energy efficiency. This demanded careful coordination between mechanical systems and control interfaces.
Additional challenges included installing domestic water services and above-ground drainage within a revised store layout, ensuring compatibility with staff and public amenities while working within the constraints of a retail fit-out programme. Delivering all systems within a tight schedule, alongside other trades, required detailed planning and coordination to achieve a fully functional and efficient retail environment.
Our Solution
At TK Maxx Northern Ireland Operations Store, Hensall delivered a fully integrated HVAC and building services solution tailored to the demands of a modern retail environment. A VRF air conditioning system was installed to provide simultaneous heating and cooling across the sales floor and back-of-house areas, ensuring consistent comfort despite varying occupancy and operational demands.
A heat recovery air handling unit (AHU) was introduced to serve the sales floor, with intelligent controls linked to CO₂ sensors in the return air duct to optimise ventilation rates, maintain air quality, and improve energy efficiency.
In addition, domestic water services and above-ground drainage were installed and adapted to suit the revised store layout, supporting both staff and customer facilities. Through careful coordination and efficient delivery, Hensall successfully provided a flexible, energy-efficient solution that enhances comfort and performance across the retail space.
