Virgin Active Merchant Sq London
The Challenge
Virgin Active is a globally recognised operator of premium health clubs, gyms, leisure centres, and spas, founded by Richard Branson as part of the Virgin Group. Known for delivering high-end fitness experiences, the brand demands exceptional standards across design, functionality, and building services performance.
Hensall was appointed as a trusted delivery partner to provide mechanical and electrical engineering services during the construction phase of a new flagship club at Merchant Square. As part of an ongoing client relationship, this project required the delivery of a complex, fully integrated services package within a high-profile, central London development.
A key challenge was designing and delivering all services from concept shell through to full construction within a live commercial environment, while ensuring seamless coordination with landlord infrastructure and other building systems. The project demanded a high level of technical precision to meet Virgin Active’s premium operational standards across gym, studio, pool, and spa environments.
The electrical scope was extensive and highly integrated, requiring full project management, detailed design, and working drawings, alongside site setup, testing, commissioning, and documentation. The installation included mains distribution systems, MCCB panels, distribution boards, containment for all services, and full earthing strategies to support a safe and reliable electrical infrastructure.
Additional complexity was introduced through the integration of LED lighting with DALI control across all areas, including studios requiring localised dimming systems to support varied fitness environments. The scheme also included small power distribution, lift supplies, and dedicated power for cardio equipment, alongside addressable fire alarm systems linked to the main building control centre.
Further electrical requirements included mechanical power supplies, AV systems such as media walls, IT infrastructure with CAT6 cabling, CCTV, security systems, and aid alarm installations, all of which required careful coordination within a densely serviced building.
From a mechanical perspective, the project required full design development from concept shell stage through to construction. Services included above-ground drainage connected to the landlord interceptor, VRF air conditioning, and heat recovery ventilation systems serving halls and studio spaces. Pool supply and extract systems added further complexity, requiring specialist environmental control within a leisure setting.
Additional mechanical systems included connections to landlord smoke extraction systems, hot water and heating via heat exchangers from primary mains, and ventilation solutions for male and female changing facilities. Delivering these systems within a high-end fitness environment required careful coordination, particularly in integrating multiple services within tight spatial constraints.
Ensuring full compliance, coordination, and performance across such a wide range of mechanical and electrical systems in a premium, high-usage facility presented a significant technical and logistical challenge from the outset.
