Virgin Active Merchant Sq London

The Challenge

Virgin Active is a globally recognised operator of premium health clubs, gyms, leisure centres, and spas, founded by Richard Branson as part of the Virgin Group. Known for delivering high-end fitness experiences, the brand demands exceptional standards across design, functionality, and building services performance.

Hensall was appointed as a trusted delivery partner to provide mechanical and electrical engineering services during the construction phase of a new flagship club at Merchant Square. As part of an ongoing client relationship, this project required the delivery of a complex, fully integrated services package within a high-profile, central London development.

A key challenge was designing and delivering all services from concept shell through to full construction within a live commercial environment, while ensuring seamless coordination with landlord infrastructure and other building systems. The project demanded a high level of technical precision to meet Virgin Active’s premium operational standards across gym, studio, pool, and spa environments.

The electrical scope was extensive and highly integrated, requiring full project management, detailed design, and working drawings, alongside site setup, testing, commissioning, and documentation. The installation included mains distribution systems, MCCB panels, distribution boards, containment for all services, and full earthing strategies to support a safe and reliable electrical infrastructure.

Additional complexity was introduced through the integration of LED lighting with DALI control across all areas, including studios requiring localised dimming systems to support varied fitness environments. The scheme also included small power distribution, lift supplies, and dedicated power for cardio equipment, alongside addressable fire alarm systems linked to the main building control centre.

Further electrical requirements included mechanical power supplies, AV systems such as media walls, IT infrastructure with CAT6 cabling, CCTV, security systems, and aid alarm installations, all of which required careful coordination within a densely serviced building.

From a mechanical perspective, the project required full design development from concept shell stage through to construction. Services included above-ground drainage connected to the landlord interceptor, VRF air conditioning, and heat recovery ventilation systems serving halls and studio spaces. Pool supply and extract systems added further complexity, requiring specialist environmental control within a leisure setting.

Additional mechanical systems included connections to landlord smoke extraction systems, hot water and heating via heat exchangers from primary mains, and ventilation solutions for male and female changing facilities. Delivering these systems within a high-end fitness environment required careful coordination, particularly in integrating multiple services within tight spatial constraints.

Ensuring full compliance, coordination, and performance across such a wide range of mechanical and electrical systems in a premium, high-usage facility presented a significant technical and logistical challenge from the outset.

Our Solution

Hensall was engaged from the outset on the Virgin Active project at Merchant Square, providing both mechanical and electrical engineering services from initial design development through to final completion. In addition, Hensall acted as project manager, overseeing all disciplines to ensure smooth coordination, programme adherence, and consistent delivery across the entire fit-out.

Working closely with the wider project team, Hensall developed detailed designs and managed the integration of complex building services to meet the high-performance requirements of a premium leisure facility. The mechanical systems were designed to deliver a robust and flexible environment, incorporating chilled water systems supplemented by additional VRF air conditioning to meet varied cooling demands throughout the club. This ensured optimal comfort across gym areas, studios, and ancillary spaces.

From an electrical perspective, Hensall coordinated and delivered all key infrastructure, ensuring seamless integration of power, lighting, and specialist systems required for a modern health and fitness environment. Careful planning and sequencing were essential to align installation activities with the broader construction programme and ensure continuity across all building services.

The project also required close coordination with landlord infrastructure, as well as careful management of technical interfaces between mechanical and electrical systems. Hensall’s role as project manager was critical in maintaining alignment across all disciplines and ensuring that design intent was fully realised on site.

As with many central London projects, logistics presented challenges, particularly in relation to material deliveries and site access. These constraints were managed effectively through detailed planning and coordination, ensuring that installation works progressed without disruption to the overall programme.

Through a strong focus on early-stage design coordination and thorough pre-construction planning, the project was delivered efficiently and without significant issues. The completed facility was successfully transformed into a high-specification, modern health and leisure centre, fully aligned with the expectations of the Virgin Active brand.
